Why It’s Important to Have a Vitamin C Serum in Your Skincare Routine

As an aesthetician, one of the products I recommend most often to clients is a Vitamin C serum. Most people are already cleansing, toning, moisturizing, etc. (don’t get me started on the people who tell me they don’t even wash their faces – they know who they are…), but they’re missing the important step of applying a Vitamin C.

Why is Vitamin C so important for our skin you ask…Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, is a natural antioxidant that protects our skin from free radicals in the environment, helps our skin repair, increases collagen production, decreases hyperpigmentation, evens skin tone, and more! It keeps our skin healthy, firm and bright!

Not all Vitamin C serums are created equal though. You want to make sure to look for one that contains L-ascorbic acid, which is the most effective vitamin C derivative with a concentration between 10-20%. A lower concentration is not going to give you the results that you want and any higher, it may be too irritating for your skin.

You also want to make sure that you pick a Vitamin C serum that comes in a darker/tinted bottle. L-ascorbic acid is very sensitive to light and can break down easily, meaning it will lose its effectiveness if exposed.

The current Vitamin C serum that I’m using and that we carry at LuxeSkin Med Spa is PCA’s C-Quench. I love it’s fresh, orangy scent, that it’s very light and goes on easily under my moisturizer and makeup, and it does not irritate my skin.
